NEIL DeGRASSE TYSON
While most of us were sleeping through science class in high school, Neil deGrasse Tyson was the kid in the front row raising his hand to answer every question. Now he's on a mission to make science "cool." Tyson is the director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History in New York, the host of PBS's NOVA scienceNOW, a frequent guest on programs like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and the author of nine books on science and astronomy. His most recent book, The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet, details the recent de-listing of Pluto as an official "planet." In this episode of Conversations at KCTS 9, Enrique Cerna talks with Tyson about his career in science, how he inadvertently started the whole hullabaloo about Pluto, and, in Tyson's words, why "Pluto had it coming."

UW CUTS

UW CUTS
Budget cuts by the legislature are starting to impact our state's colleges and universities. Lawmakers cut $500 million from higher education over the next two years. We sat down with University of Washington President Mark Emmert to talk about how the cuts are affecting our state's biggest school in the form of staff layoffs, tuition increases, enrollment cuts, and reduced resources for students.

GREENWATCH: FROM CROP TO CUP
Seattle has long been the "coffee capital" of the U.S. Now, local roasters like Caffe Vita and Grounds for Change are leading the way in responsible coffee drinking, brining concepts like farm-direct, fair trade, organic and even carbon-neutral coffee into the mainstream. While a fascinating exhibit at the Burke Museum in Seattle teaches coffee lovers about the complex web of activity that goes into every cup of coffee.

FORMER SURGEON GENERAL CARMONA
Former Bush Administration Surgeon General Richard Carmona is on a new mission to help America fight chronic, but preventable diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and even cancer. In this interview, Carmona tells why our healthcare system is actually a "sick-care" system; which chronic diseases are the biggest burden on the system; and how much money and how many lives we could save if we focused on prevention instead of just treatment.

FIGHTING FRAUD: OIL & GAS SCHEMES
They promise huge returns on sure-fire investments in oil and natural gas exploration. But all too often, these enticing offers are just another scheme to rip you off. In our continuing series on investment scams, we look at oil & gas fraud. How slick con artists use extremely sophisticated tactics to swindle even knowledgeable investors out of their money.

SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
The Seattle International Film Festival kicks off this weekend with 392 films, including 10 world premieres. Stars such as Francis Ford Coppola, Benjamin Bratt, Paul Giamatti and Spike Lee will all visit Seattle for various screenings. And local films will hold a place of honor too, as the festival features 16 local films, including director Lynn Shelton's acclaimed "Humpday."

NO SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION

NO SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION
Looks like there won't be a special session for the state legislature after all. The Governor and key lawmakers couldn't agree on an agenda, so plans for an additional month in Olympia have been scrapped. We talk with SeattlePI.com columnist Joel Connelly about what it means, and what business will be left unfinished for another year.

THROUGH FRESHMEN EYES IN OLYMPIA
Lawmakers adjourned the 2009 legislative session after balancing the budget, plugging a nine billion dollar deficit. So was the session a success? We decided to ask some newcomers to Olympia. Senior Producer Ethan Morris gets a unique perspective on the legislature from two newly-elected representatives, Democrat Reuven Carlyle and Republican Mike Hope, who both just finished their first session.

SEATTLE GANG FORUM
Gang activity and violence continue to escalate in Seattle. This week, KCTS 9's Enrique Cerna moderated a special panel discussion on gangs, following a special screening of the upcoming documentary Crips & Bloods: Made in America. Watch the panel discussion.

FIGHTING FRAUD: DON'T BE A VICTIM
Think you're too smart to be ripped-off in an investment scam? Think again. Sophisticated con artists know how to use your own investment savvy against you. In our continuing series Fighting Fraud, we show how the typical scam victim isn't a lonely shut-in, but often someone who has a wide knowledge of investments and finances. We talk with AARP scam expert Doug Shadel about what characteristics make you more likely to fall victim to fraud, and how to avoid being conned out of your hard-earned cash.

GREENWATCH: THE TERRY THOMAS BUILDING
We highlight an eye-catching new Seattle structure: the award-winning Terry Thomas building on South Lake Union. The 40,000 sq. foot commercial structure, designed by local firm Weber Thompson, was recently ranked among the "Top Ten Green Projects" of 2009 by the American Institute of Architects. Constructed without air conditioning to save energy, the building features a cooling central courtyard, heat-resistant blinds, and automatic exterior vents to control temperature. The LEED Gold certified building is one of many new structures in Seattle, including the Vulcan developments on South Lake Union, following the green architecture trend.

The LEED Gold certified building is one of many new structures in Seattle, including the Vulcan developments on South Lake Union, following the green architecture trend.</itunes:summary>
