The 40,000 sq. foot commercial structure, designed by local firm Weber Thompson, was recently ranked among the "Top Ten Green Projects" of 2009 by the American Institute of Architects. Constructed without air conditioning to save energy, the building features a cooling central courtyard, heat-resistant blinds, and automatic exterior vents to control temperature. It is one of the biggest oil deposits on the planet, and right in America's back yard. The Athabasca Oil Sands in Alberta, Canada -- 50,000 square miles of heavy crude oil mixed with sand and clay. Major oil companies are already refining this oil to feed America's voracious oil appetite. But the process of extracting the oil is difficult and expensive, and, like strip mining, has major environmental impacts. We travel to the Athabasca Oil Sands to take a closer look. How much oil the U.S. is currently getting from our neighbors to the north? Are the Oil Sands a possible solution to reduce our dependence on Middle East oil? And the financial benefits versus the environmental costs of developing this resource and feeding our crude addiction.
